AIGU took part in the UNESCO International Conference “Cultural Heritage in 21th century“, held from 27 to 29 November in Naples: AIGU President Gianluca Buoncore participated in the various sessions of the Conference focusing on heritage, the enhancement of the complementarity between the two UNESCO Conventions, sustainable development and the protection of heritage during conflicts.
“We must rethink our approach to the protection of every form of cultural heritage by integrating perspectives and placing civil society and indigenous peoples at the centre of our actions” – these were the words of UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, who attended the Conference.
The event was also attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani and the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano.
At the end of the Conference, the policy document “The Spirit of Naples” was presented: a call for action addressed to UNESCO member states, “for a more effective protection of heritage”, acting in particular “against climate change, which affects the conservation of sites, and against mass tourism, which could cause territories to lose their identity”.
