Encounter, Dialogue, Education, Action: an IDEA for the World Heritage Sites of Florence and its surroundings

The Tuscany Group of the Italian Youth Association for UNESCO – ETS (AIGU) presents the first meeting of the IDEA project – Incontro, Dialogo, Educazione, Azione (Encounter, Dialogue, Education, Action). The initiative, made possible thanks to the collaboration between AIGU and the Metropolitan City of Florence, will take place on 27 September, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Medici Garden of Pratolino, with a presentation session and round table open to the public from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. The session open to the public will consist of a morning of dialogue and discussion focused on two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the “Historic Centre of Florence” and the “Medici Villas and Gardens in Tuscany”.

The protagonists will be the institutions responsible for the management of the two sites and the main youth and other associations operating in Florence and its surroundings: Angeli del Bello, Associazione le Vie dei Medici, Club UNESCO Firenze, FAI Giovani Firenze. During the meeting, there will be a dialogue on the role that these associations play, or could play, in enhancing the cultural and natural heritage of the area encompassing the two UNESCO sites, also with a view to identifying solutions to promote the two sites in an integrated manner. A key theme will be harnessing the potential of local and youth participation in the management of cultural and natural heritage, in order to strengthen a sense of belonging and care for this heritage among residents and city users. In addition to the Metropolitan City and the members of the aforementioned associations, the Day will also be attended by the Florence World Heritage and UNESCO Relations Office of the Municipality of Florence and the Heritage Research Laboratory of the Department of Architecture of the University of Florence.

The event is free and open to everyone, AIGU members and the general public, upon registration, according to the following schedule:

• 9:00 am guided tour of the Pratolino Garden (not open to the public)
• 10:30 am-1:30 pm round table (open to the public)
• free lunch break at the Villa Demidoff inn
• 3:00-6:00 pm workshop and debate (not open to the public)
