On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, and the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Italian Youth Association for UNESCO presents WHY | World Heritage Youth.
WHY will be an opportunity for discussion and for building shared proposals for the future of the two “Sister Conventions” and for their application by young people involved in various capacities in the field of cultural and natural heritage. Other cross-cutting themes addressed by the event will be youth activism, ecotourism and environmental sustainability.

Aim: The event seeks to place at the centre of the debate the experiences and skills of young professionals and youth organisations active in the field of World Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage, in order to:
- define innovative proposals for a “Youth Charter” to be presented to national and international institutional leaders. The Charter will be signed by AIGU, as promoter, and by all participants in the initiative;
- create a network that brings together the experiences of young people and youth organisations active in World Heritage (WH) and Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), and that is operational and proactive through regular meetings.
In this context, three main themes will be addressed through three workshops:
- New professions and professionals for World Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage
- The role of young people for Natural Heritage
- Towards fairer and more representative Lists of sites and elements worldwide
Who it is for: youth organisations, associations, young professionals and, in general, young people involved in various capacities in the management, promotion and conservation of World Heritage sites and elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
