THE FOURTH EDITION OF AIGU’S ITALIAN YOUTH FORUM
UNESCO INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE WILL TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT AIGU’S ITALIAN YOUTH FORUM
The cultural event organised annually by the Italian Youth Association for UNESCO will take place in Cagliari from 22 to 24 April 2022
The fourth Italian Youth Forum (IYF) organised by the Italian Youth Association for UNESCO, scheduled to take place in Cagliari at the Ex Manifattura Tabacchi from 22 to 24 April, will revolve around the theme of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Young people from all over Italy will gather in the capital of Sardinia to discuss the performing arts, ritual and festive events, traditional craftsmanship, food, and the safeguarding of cultural heritage.

Cultural heritage means the whole body of living traditions passed down from generation to generation, as defined in the “Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage” adopted by UNESCO in 2003 and ratified by Italy in 2007.
22 April: the first day of the IYF
The first appointment on the Italian Youth Forum programme will be the opening event, on Friday 22 April at 6 pm, featuring a succession of leading guests from the worlds of culture and institutions. The event will be opened by Chiara Bocchio, President of AIGU, and Federico Porcedda, AIGU regional representative for Sardinia, who, after a warm welcome, will launch the video message from Franco Bernabè, President of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO. This will be followed by greetings from the President of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, Christian Solinas. Many guests and topics will be addressed, with the following speakers in conversation on stage: Daniele Frongia (Ministry for Youth Policies), Maria Assunta Peci (Ministry of Culture, UNESCO Office), Giacomo Carta (National Youth Council), Maria Assunta Serra (Sardegna Ricerche). The first part of the event will also feature the Mayor of Cagliari, Paolo Truzzu, and the Mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, joining remotely.
The keynote address of the evening will be given by Tim Curtis, Secretary of the 2003 UNESCO Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage, who will deliver a speech on the challenges and prospects of the 2003 UNESCO Convention.
The opening event will be punctuated by various social moments, with performances by: the Flamenco Soul group, the Tenore Mamujadinu di Mamoiada and Usùsule of Siniscola, and finally the Maschere di Ottana. At the Ex Manifattura, also on the evening of 22 April, an exhibition space dedicated to Intangible Cultural Heritage, created for the IYF, will be inaugurated.
23 April: themes and guests of the scheduled working tables
On the second day of the Italian Youth Forum, 23 April, four working tables will take place under the scientific coordination of the Ministry of Culture (MiC), represented by Elena Sinibaldi, National Focal Point for the UNESCO Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The themes of the working tables will be:
1. PERFORMING ARTS, RITUAL AND FESTIVE EVENTS AND TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP
The aim of the table will be to deepen knowledge of Intangible Cultural Heritage in relation to traditional craft practices, ritual and festive events and the performing arts, highlighting the risks and good practices for safeguarding these community expressions.
2. FOOD, BETWEEN INTANGIBLE HERITAGE AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
The table will focus on the theme of food, explored mainly from two angles: food as intangible heritage and food as a lever for promoting environmental, economic and social sustainability, with a view to mitigating the impacts of climate change.
3. SAFEGUARDING HERITAGE AND THE ROLE OF YOUNG PEOPLE
The table aims to examine the issue of declining youth interest in Intangible Cultural Heritage and to discuss possible actions for its safeguarding and transmission to future generations.
4. 50 YEARS OF THE WORLD HERITAGE CONVENTION
In view of the celebrations marking 50 years of the 1972 UNESCO Convention concerning the Protection of the World Natural and Cultural Heritage, the table intends to stimulate reflection on the future of heritage, on the relationship younger generations have with it, and on the link between the 1972 UNESCO Convention and the 2003 Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Among the various speakers at the tables who have confirmed their attendance at the Italian Youth Forum are: Pier Luigi Petrillo (Chair of the body of world experts on the Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage), Patrizia Nardi (Technical-scientific coordinator of the UNESCO Project “Network of large shoulder-borne processional structures”), Stefania Bait and Marco Demo (Italian Youth Delegates to the United Nations), Valentina Zingari and Benedetta Ubertazzi (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Facilitators), Carlo Francini (Head of the Florence World Heritage and UNESCO Relations Office – Municipality of Florence, and Scientific Coordinator of the Italian World Heritage Association), Paolo Andrea Bartorelli (Embassy Counsellor, Head of Office VI DGDP, UNESCO and International Cultural Organisations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation).
