On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Italian Youth Association for UNESCO presents WHY | World Heritage Youth.
WHY will serve as a forum for dialogue and the formulation of shared proposals regarding the future of these two “sister conventions” and their implementation by young people involved in various capacities within the cultural and natural heritage sectors. Additional cross-cutting themes addressed during the event will encompass youth activism, ecotourism, and environmental sustainability.

Objectives: The event aims to place the expertise and experiences of young professionals and youth-led organizations active in World Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage at the core of the debate, in order to:
- Formulate innovative proposals for a “Youth Charter” to be presented to national and international institutional leadership. Alongside AIGU as the promoting entity, the Charter will be signed by all participants in the initiative;
- Establish an operational, proactive network that systematizes the experiences of young people and youth organizations engaged in World Heritage (WH) and Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) through regular meetings.
Within this framework, three principal themes will be addressed across three dedicated workshops:
- Emerging Professions and Professionals for World Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage
- The Role of Youth in Natural Heritage
- Toward More Equitable and Representative Lists of Sites and Elements Worldwide
Target Audience: Youth entities, associations, young professionals, and, more broadly, young individuals involved in various capacities in the management, enhancement, and conservation of World Heritage sites and Intangible Cultural Heritage elements.
